Short Story Essay--Share your choice of author(s) and comparison claim you will make

Hi Everyone--I have given you a handout on the short story comparison assignment.  Here you should write a note to your classmates, and to me, stating what writer you have chosen (or what two writers you wish to compare), why you have chosen that writer or writers and what your focus will be--theme, genre, symbolism etc (see handout).

We will use these blogs to discuss your topics in more depth in class. Please try to post this evening (Wednesday May 15).

Thank you!  (And read "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" for tomorrow.)

  1. I have chosen to do #1 on you handout, and my claim/thesis is that to uncover a character's actual personality we must read the whole story in order to know their entire interests. we can also have an idea of a character through the perspective the story is told, but as stated before the story must be completely read to create a full image of that character.

P.S: (Professor please let me know if my thesis is strong or if it lacks something, i will post it on here).

    1. good but you need to clarify basis of comparison by specifying differences between the two female characters--your post doesn't tell me which stories you are using!

  3. I have chosen to compare Kate chopin's "awakening" with "the story of an hour." I feel that both stories portray a feeling of the oppression of women in society and marriage. I am intrigued by the creative impulses of the character in "the awakening" to be an artist, and the overwhelming feeling of liberation that the female character feels in "the story of an hour." I also find the ending of both stories interesting in that both women die at the end, which may be chopin's way of demonstrating the extreme sense of hopelessness and despair that these women feel. It's as if death was the only true freedom they're allowed. Both these stories are very powerful in contrasting the perception of happiness with the reality of true happiness.
